Two Alums Join Clinical Faculty

We’re proud to announce that two of our recent graduates will now be working with us! Meet Dr. Joan Castañeda and Dr. Ghazal Naseri.

About Dr. Joan Castañeda

Dr. Joan Castañeda is an optometrist trained in the diagnosis and management of ocular disease, with an interest in primary open-angle glaucoma. During her residency training through UC Berkeley, she provided comprehensive eye care within the campus as well as affiliated community clinics where she received mentorship from retina and glaucoma specialists and examined patients ranging from 14 months to 100 years of age. She also worked at the Refractive Surgery Center, providing LASIK and PRK consultations and participating in pre- and post-operative care.

Outside the clinic, Dr. Castañeda is membership co-director for the local Alameda Contra Costa Optometric Society, where she enjoys participating in organized optometry to advocate for the profession. In her free time, she loves spending time with friends and family, visiting local hiking trails, trying to get the attention of her cat, and indulging in sweets.

About Dr. Ghazal Naseri

Dr. Ghazal Naseri is an optometrist who performs comprehensive eye exams for patients of all ages. She diagnoses, treats, and manages a wide range of ocular disorders, from refractive conditions to ocular diseases such as glaucoma and macular degeneration. She is specialized in management of anterior segment disease and specialty contact lens fitting for patients with irregular corneas and ocular surface disease.

After receiving her master’s degree in biomedical engineering at the University of British Columbia, Dr. Naseri started her OD education at UC Berkeley School of Optometry. She completed her OD degree in 2019 and stayed to complete a residency in primary care/contact lenses at Berkeley Optometry.

She was involved in myopia control research during optometry school and worked in myopia control clinic during her years at Berkeley Optometry and will continue to do so in the future. She is also actively involved in the community. She acted as a member on the continuing medical education (CME) committee at University Health Services, Tang Center, working closely with other health care professionals. She is a member of American Optometric Association, American Academy of Optometry and California Optometric Association.

In her free time, she enjoys traveling, hiking, learning about different cultures and languages, and spending time with family and friends.
