The Herbert Wertheim School of Optometry & Vision Science invites current OD students to apply to our summer research training program funded by the National Eye Institute (National Institutes of Health). The goal of this program is to introduce students to research as well as to opportunities for research as a career goal, thus increasing the number of OD graduates going on to post-graduate research. Some participants also co-author publications or present their work at the American Academy of Optometry or other scientific meetings.

Funding

NEI funding is available for students undergoing graduate training towards their OD degrees. The program requires a minimum full-time 10 week commitment during the summer.

Successful applicants receive a stipend of $7,056 for 3-month summer appointments.

Should You Apply?

This summer fellowship program is an ideal opportunity for you to determine whether research is for you. If you are a first-year optometry student with a potential interest in research, you are strongly encouraged to apply. Neither prior research experience nor current research activities are pre-requisites to applying. This program also represents an opportunity to get to know future colleagues from other campuses and compare programs.
