Coordinator, Vision Science & Residency
Admissions & Student Affairs
School of Optometry & Vision Science
Berkeley, CA. 94720-2020
As a native of Modesto, Valerie is excited to live in the Berkeley area and to support OD/VS students. In 2021, she received her M.S.Ed in Education Policy from the University of Pennsylvania. During graduate school, Valerie worked with the United Negro College Fund (UNCF) to help Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) better understand the unique ways their funding models support the students they serve. The equitable metrics Valerie assisted in creating not only helped the HBCU governing boards better understand their institutions but allowed them to lobby for additional federal funding to support their institutions.
Valerie’s work with UNCF and experience at UC Merced sparked a passion for developing equitable metric assessments for Minority Serving Institutions, working students, and supporting programs focusing on research. As Program Coordinator, Valerie hopes to bring a unique perspective and creative personality to our office and students.
Outside of work, Valerie enjoys baking, learning how to play Super Smash Bro Melee on the GameCube, and exploring local museums and art exhibits.
Major Areas of Responsibility (Vision Science & Residency Programs): campus wide resources, vision science milestones (including QE, advancement to candidacy, etc.), major departmental event support including BAVRD, Vision Science student organization support (in conjunction with LEAD Center), purchasing & reimbursement, student crisis, student affairs, student leave of absences and withdrawals.
