Dr. Calmere grew up in Southern California and studied biology at the University of California, Riverside where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree. He then attended the UC Berkeley School of Optometry earning a second bachelor’s degree in physiological optics and a Doctor of Optometry degree. He went on at UC Berkeley to complete a residency in Cornea and Contact Lenses.

Dr. Calmere spent over 10 years early in his career teaching Optometry at UC Berkeley. He concurrently practiced in hospital settings, private practice sub-specialty ophthalmology settings and in a large seven doctor optometry practice where he was the managing partner. He has been involved in clinical research over his career. In addition, he helped develop the user interface and workflow for electronic health records designed for optometrists and ophthalmologists. After leaving private practice, Dr. Calmere returned to the School of Optometry to teach full-scope optometry, ophthalmic optics and practice management.

Dr. Calmere has always been active in professional optometry serving on committees and boards for his local optometric society and the California Optometric Association where he was recognized in 2010 as the California Optometrist of the year. Dr. Calmere is a fellow in the American Academy of Optometry where he serves on an admittance committee. Dr. Calmere is a board-certified Diplomate of the American Board of Optometry.

In his spare time, Dr. Calmere enjoys outdoor activities having spent many years running, hiking and traveling with his wife, Linda. He also enjoys spending time with family and friends as well as mentoring young optometrists and international college students.
