New PEDIG study highlights the effectiveness of patching therapy to treat intermittent exotropia.

A new publication from the Pediatric Eye Disease Investigator Group (PEDIG) includes contributions from UC Berkeley authors Drs. Jennifer Fisher and Yasmin Javed. The randomized clinical trial found that prescribed full-time alternate day patching was more effective than observation in improving distance control and reducing the magnitude of deviation – even with low adherence. These findings support patching as a meaningful non-surgical treatment option, though the duration of benefit and comparisons with other interventions require further study.
