The Michael G. Harris Distinguished Service Award recognizes a graduate for their outstanding service to the Berkeley Optometry community. Established in 2016, this award honors the contributions, commitment, and impact of Dr. Michael G. Harris, Class of 1965. It is in the spirit of those who forged the path for the creation of the School of Optometry, the school’s position on campus, and our premiere position in the profession that this award was created.
Bob and Rosemary Melrose were enthusiastically selected as the joint 2022 honorees for their generous volunteerism and commitment to school initiatives such as our Alumni Board and the signature Business Management Immersion Program. The Melrose’s insights and counsel have especially helped shape and strengthen this program, ensuring our profession’s private practice future. The countless hours they have spent hosting, advising, and inspiring the brightest aspiring optometrists is a testament to their kindness and commitment to service.
The Melroses have enriched the school and our community through extensive, enthusiastic engagement and service: including, Rosemary’s service to the Alumni Board, and Bob’s countless vision screening trips with the Rotary Club. Together, both have been donors, supporting the school in many areas, including establishing the Craig Hisaka Memorial Scholarship Fund. This award speaks to their admirable work on our school’s behalf.
