On Friday, May 31st, Dean Flanagan, Chancellor Christ, and Mayor Welch of Emeryville were joined by campus leaders, and project architects for the groundbreaking ceremony of our new satellite clinic in Emeryville, CA. Dr. Herbert Wertheim was not able to attend, but his presence was keenly felt; his transformational $50 million donation to the school is the driving force behind the school’s expansion project, which includes the establishment of a new satellite campus in Emeryville.

The groundbreaking ceremony took place at the construction site in Emeryville. When completed in late 2025, the 39,400 gross square foot satellite campus will offer optometry-led, interdisciplinary children’s eye care and vision health; the Academy for the Advancement of Optometric Education; an expansion of our residency program; and new teaching spaces that will feature clinical skills labs where students can practice basic as well as advanced techniques.
