Members of our Low Vision student group recently volunteered at a Goalball Clinic hosted by BORP Adaptive Sports and Recreation in partnership with the Challenged Athletes Foundation (CAF), supporting a dynamic Paralympic sport designed for blind and visually impaired athletes.
The clinic welcomed participants with varying levels of experience, offering hands-on instruction in goalball fundamentals, including blocking and throwing techniques. Six optometry students – Hanna De Bryun, Harjot Kaur, Suzuka Kawaguchi, Vickie Kuo, Tiffany Ng and Ananya Parimi assisted throughout the day; helping facilitate drills and serving as referees during gameplay.
In addition to supporting athletes on the court, students learned about the history of goalball, which was developed after World War II as a rehabilitation sport for visually impaired veterans. The group also had the opportunity to meet Joseph Hamilton (pictured above), Paralympic silver medalist and member of the U.S. goalball team at the 2016 Rio Paralympics.
