Extraordinary New Gifts

A class of OD students participating in a lecture.
In celebration of our centennial year in 2023, some generous alums are stepping up to establish new funds to honor the family members and mentors who impacted their optometric careers.

Dr. Charmaine M. Eng, Class of 1963, established the Dr. Charmaine M. Eng and Ngin Family Endowment to provide endowed support for student programs and faculty research at the Herbert Wertheim School of Optometry & Vision Science. Dr. Charmaine Eng is one of six in her extended family, spanning three generations, to practice optometry. We are proud and grateful to Dr. Charmaine Eng, Dr. Weylin Eng, Dr. Kristine Eng, and Dr. Serene Ngin for all their work in the community.

A grateful alum and former student of Low Vision legends, Dr. Ian Bailey and Dr. Edwin Mehr, is honoring each of them with an anonymous gift. These gifts establish the Ian and Valerie Bailey Low Vision Residency Fund to support Low Vision residents and the Edwin and Helen Mehr Low Vision Memorial Fund to support the Low Vision Clinic and its faculty. Professor Emeritus Ian Bailey and the late Associate Clinical Professor and late Associate Clinical Professor Edwin Mehr have contributed immensely to the specialty of Low Vision and the care of patients with impaired vision. Their influence is wide-ranging and long-lasting, particularly in advocating a multi-disciplinary approach to patient care. We look forward to other former students, residents, and colleagues supporting these funds.

You can donate to these funds now, during Big Give, or email optodev@berkeley.edu for questions.

These newly created funds count towards our campaign, Our Vision, Our Future, and Big Give launch gifts. Speaking of Big Give, Dr. Michael Harris, GodFather of Big Give, once again pledged $100,000 to challenge and inspire our alums to show their pride and donate to Big Give. Stay tuned for more details on this challenge match!
