This summer, 4th Year Doctor of Optometry (OD) student, Mihret Girum, was awarded the inaugural Empowering Equity Scholarship, an award through a partnership between VSP Vision and Black EyeCare Perspective. Mihret was one of two recipients of the inaugural award. This year’s awards were announced at the National Optometric Association (NOA) Convention this past July in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.
“VSP Vision and Black Eyecare Perspective are proud to unite in their efforts to support the 13% Promise, the mission to improve and increase representation of Blacks and African Americans in the optometric industry to align more closely with the United States Census population” – VSP
The collaborative effort empowered them to create a scholarship of $15,000 per recipient, for which recipients submitted a “Public Awareness” video highlighting the importance of eyecare in underrepresented communities. Congratulations, Mihret!
