We are thrilled to celebrate the incredible life and career of Dr. Gerald Westheimer, beloved former faculty member and Optometry & Vision Science Hall of Famer, who turned 101 this May! Dr. Westheimer continues to make scholarly contributions – his latest paper, “Defocus degradation of retinal images in the Maxwellian view,” was published this year in the Journal of the Optical Society of America.
Born in Berlin in 1924, Gerald emigrated to Australia in 1938, and began a remarkable journey that has spanned continents, disciplines, and decades of pioneering research in vision science. He has authored more than 250 publications and contributed to foundational texts like Adler’s Physiology of the Eye, and is also the scientist who first coined the term “hyperacuity.”
Happy Birthday, Dr. Westheimer – and thank you for continuing to inspire us all!
