CE Course Accreditation

The Herbert Wertheim School of Optometry & Vision Science offers live, interactive online CE courses (synchronous virtual), live in-person CE programs, and on-demand online (asynchronous virtual) CE courses.

Our interactive online lectures meet the live, in-person CE requirements of the California State Board of Optometry and are considered 'Synchronous Virtual' learning by COPE. As of May 2020, California licensees may complete all of their required CE hours using live online courses. Attendees from states outside of California should verify if their state board accepts COPE-accredited 'Synchronous Virtual' CE. For live online events, attendees are able to interact with the speaker and ask questions in real-time via Zoom video conference.
Our asynchronous, online lectures meet the 'self-study' CE coursework requirements of the California State Board of Optometry. The CA Board accepts up to 20 hours of CE earned through the completion of our accredited asynchronous courses. These courses are COPE-accredited as 'Asynchronous Virtual' format CE, which includes a required post-course test. Attendees from states outside of California should verify if their state board accepts COPE-accredited 'Asynchronous Virtual' CE. ARBO has collected the CE requirements for most regulatory boards in the U.S. and Canada at www.arbo.org/cestateinfo.
Our live, in-person programs meet the live, in-person CE requirements of the California State Board of Optometry and are considered 'Synchronous In-Person' learning by COPE.

How to Enroll in CE On-Demand

Our new asynchronous online CE Course Catalog is designed to be fully self-service, so you can enroll and complete your CE course from any place, at any time.

On-Demand CE Course Catalog
Our online, asynchronous courses are hosted on the Canvas platform and require you to create and log in to your own Canvas account in order to access the course content. Here’s how to get started and earn your CE certificate:

  1. Go to the CE Course Catalog site clicking the button above and select the course you’d like to enroll in: https://berkeleyoptometry.catalog.instructure.com/browse/on-demand-ce. Look for courses that say “Asynchronous CE” in the description.
  2. On the course page, click the “Enroll Now” button.
  3. You will be prompted to create an account or sign in with your account. Make sure to create an account with an email address that you use regularly and choose a password that you will remember. You do not have to use a @berkeley.edu email address to create account.*
  4. Complete the enrollment form and payment flow. If you have a promo code, enter the information in the enrollment form.
  5. Once enrolled, go to your Student Dashboard and click the “Begin Course” button: https://berkeleyoptometry.catalog.instructure.com/dashboard (you must be signed in to access your dashboard page).
  6. On the Canvas site, review the course objectives, watch the course lecture, and download the course handout.
  7. Complete the multiple-choice post-course test on Canvas. COPE requires a score of 70% or better in order for a certificate of completion to be issued.
  8. Once you pass the test, access your certificate on the course module page and trigger a certificate PDF to be emailed to you for your records. You can access all your CE certificates by signing into the certificate dashboard here: https://certificates.optometry.berkeley.edu/issuer/69856/credentials.
  9. Complete the post-course survey and let us know any feedback.

NOTE: If you are a UC Berkeley student, resident, or faculty member with a @berkeley.edu email address, you will need to create a new Canvas account or sign in with a previously created account when you enroll. Even though it is a Canvas site, this is a different site than bCourses! The bCourses site is not accessible to external users and cannot be used for CE courses that are open to public registration. You can use you @berkeley.edu email account to sign up for a CE course, but you will be prompted to create and verify a new account when you register. Once created, you can use this account to register for any CE course on the site.
