Tang Center

The Tang Eye Center is a primary care/contact lens clinic. 3rd year students, 4th year students and residents rotate through the clinic. Students experience a large number of patients in the following categories:

  • General visual examinations
  • Contact lens fitting and evaluations, including soft sphere, toric, RGP sphere, bitoric and a smaller number of specialty lens fits such as keratoconics and soft multi-focals.
  • Urgent care referrals from primary care MDs and nurse practitioners which include anterior and posterior segment disease.

4th year interns are given an accelerated exam schedule and rotate through three distinct patient columns during the session. These include:

  • Turbo exams-a combination of eight primary care and contact lens exams in an accelerated schedule.
  • General exam/follow-up schedule-exams in a 60 minute format with interspersed follow-ups.
  • Follow-up schedule-eight follow-up patients and any urgent care walk-ins.
  • Summer multi-level Clinic- 4th years during the summer session see patients and also act in a mentorship role with beginning 3rd year students.

The Primary Care Resident is assigned to the Tang Eye Center for a minimum of 40% of the clinic schedule. They are responsible for patient care, urgent care consultations and clinical teaching.

Faculty Responsibility

  • Assist Student Clinicians in developing a diagnostic assessment and management plan for each individual patient.
  • Provide guidance in areas or procedures where the Student Clinician expresses or demonstrates a need for assistance.
  • Demonstrate certain diagnostic procedures and techniques that may be infrequently utilized by the Student Clinician.
  • Repeat certain diagnostic tests pertinent to the evaluation and diagnosis to check clinical performance and insure high quality patient care. Retinal evaluations will be performed by a faculty member in all cases where pupil dilation is performed.
  • Actively participate in delivery of care and patient consultation thus ensuring high-level patient care and giving Student Clinicians the opportunity to learn by example.
  • Review and sign each patient record after exam completion and assist Student Clinicians with proper medical record keeping.
  • Accept professional responsibility for patients seen with a Student Clinician under said Faculty Member’s supervision. This may include communication with other health professionals, phone calls to patients, and occasional after-hours examinations.
  • Provide time for consultation with other Faculty Members or Student Clinicians regarding evaluation, management, and related issues of patient care.
  • Perform examinations on patients without the assistance of Student Clinicians when appropriate or for clinical educational purposes.
