Type of Practice: HMO: Primary Care Optometry (Adult & Pediatric), Co-management of patients with ophthalmology and other medical services.
Patient Care:
The student intern will work independently and collaboratively with a staff of 12 optometrists, 8 ophthalmologists (subspecialties to include retina, glaucoma, urgent care, oculo-plastics and pediatric/strabismus), ophthalmic techs, large optical department, contact lens fitter, pharmacy and interactions with other medical services.
Patients will be examined, diagnosed and treated directly through office visits. All interactions will be documented and managed through a fully integrated EHR (electronic health record) system. Interns will spend a great portion of their time seeing patients (8-12+ daily), but will have additional exposure working with ophthalmology and ocular technology services.
Clinic Equipment:
All optometric lanes are equipped with automated phoroptors. Visual field equipment to include FDT, HVF and Goldmann units. Diagnostic scanning equipment: Spectralis OCT (optical coherence tomography) with macula, optic nerve, anterior segment angle and corneal measurement capacities. The clinic also houses a retinal digital camera, fluorescein angiography camera, YA & SLT lasers, corneal topographer and manual/automated ultrasound devices.
Educational Goals
To strengthen and improve clinical acumen. Elevate the quality of comprehensive and problem focused exams. Recognize, diagnose and treat visual and ocular conditions. Utilize current tools and technology to achieve correct diagnoses and develop appropriate management plans. Interact and co-‐manage patients with other healthcare providers. Focus will be on clinical problem solving, exam efficiency, and enhancing communication skills.
Additionally, Interns will participate in journal club, case presentations, and grand rounds. Interns will also attend all department meetings, lunch and learn lectures and other professional meetings as scheduled.
Clinic Hours: 8:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m. Monday through Friday
