A distinguished graduate of our OD Class of 1981 and PhD Class of 1987, Dr. Bonanno has made lasting contributions to both our school and the fields of optometry and vision science. He served on the UC Berkeley faculty from 1989 to 1997 before embarking on a remarkable career at Indiana University’s School of Optometry, where he held roles as Associate Dean for Research, Associate Dean for Academic Affairs, and Dean from 2010 to 2023.
Internationally recognized for his pioneering research in corneal physiology, Dr. Bonanno has advanced understanding of contact lens–induced hypoxia, carbon dioxide accumulation, and their effects on corneal pH and endothelial health. Through decades of leadership, teaching, and mentorship, he has strengthened our profession and inspired generations of optometrists and vision scientists.
