Optometry Prerequisites

As listed in the 2015-2017 catalog

The following is a list of recommended courses at this institution that will fulfill the minimum prerequisites for Berkeley Optometry. Advanced upper-division courses in these subjects may be substituted for any of the lower division courses listed below. Courses have to be taken for a letter grade. Courses for which AP credit was received may be counted as long as they are listed on your college transcript. Our office has updated these courses to the best of our knowledge based upon the school catalog.

  1. General Chemistry: Chem 127 and Chem 128
  2. Organic Chemistry: Chem 216 or Chem 312
  3. Biochemistry: Chem 371 or Chem 313
  4. General Biology: Bio 161, 162 and one upper division level Bio course (4-5 units)
  5. Calculus: Math 141 or Math 161
  6. General Physics: Phys 121, 122, 123 or Phys 141, 132, 133
  7. Reading & Composition: Engl 134, Engl 145 or 148, and/or other writing intensive courses
  8. Microbiology: Mcro 221 or 224
  9. Anatomy: Bio 231, 232 or Bio 406, 407, 408, 409 (Bio 361 also recommended.)
  10. Physiology: Bio 231, 232 or Bio 406, 407, 408, 409 (Bio 361 also recommended.)
  11. Statistics: Stat 217 or 218
  12. Psychology: Psy 201 or 202
  13. Immunology: Bio 426 ***Recommended, but not required: Kine 406
