Stanford Pediatric Residency
Mission
The Optometric Residency Program at the University of California, Berkeley, Herbert Wertheim School of Optometry and Vision Science and its affiliate programs seek to recruit and admit the best-qualified post-graduate optometrists and to provide them with advanced clinical education and concentrated clinical experience in specialty areas of optometry in an institutional or hospital-based setting. This mentored educational and clinical experience prepares optometrists for lifelong scholarship in patient care, education, and optometric leadership.
The Optometry Residency Program at Byers Eye Institute at Stanford is a one-year post-doctoral clinical training program designed to provide advanced competency in pediatric eye care with an emphasis in ocular disease and scholarly development for recent optometry graduates within a multidisciplinary medical center.
Program Goals
TThe primary goal of the program is to develop the resident’s advanced clinical competency in providing high-quality pediatric eye care. Residents will learn to function as an effective member of the health care team through treatment and management of various complex pediatric visual and ocular conditions, in the setting of a multidisciplinary medical center. The resident’s scholarly development is enhanced through a structured academic program designed to complement the clinical training. The residency will prepare its graduates for a lifelong commitment to quality pediatric patient care, optometric education, and leadership.
Time Commitment
The resident is expected to be in clinic five days a week, Monday – Friday from 8:00am to approximately 5:00pm. There are no on-call duties.
Requirements for Residency Completion
- Complete one year of training.
- Three oral case presentations as part of the Resident Lecture Series at UC Berkeley.
- One oral case presentation as part of the Resident Lecture Series at Byers Eye Institute.
- One oral case presentation at Resident Research Day at Byers Eye Institute.
- Complete residency manuscript of publishable quality with approval from Program Coordinator and Residency Director.

Clinical Curriculum
Pediatric optometrists serve as pediatric primary eye care providers in our pediatric ophthalmology service in which residents encounter various ophthalmic conditions including clinically significant refractive error, strabismus, amblyopia, non-strabismic binocular vision disorders, and anterior and posterior segment disease. Residents will also participate in specialized mentorship in our pediatric low vision and contact lens clinics as well as our adult urgent care clinic. Residents will also have the opportunity to spend time in our pediatric subspeciality retina, glaucoma, and neuro-ophthalmology clinics.
Academic Curriculum and Research Activity
The weekly scholarly program will build the resident’s grasp of fundamental ocular conditions, including etiology, diagnosis, treatment, and proper management. The resident will attend didactic activities including journal club and Department of Ophthalmology Grand Rounds. The resident will give oral presentations three times a year during the Resident Lecture Series at UC Berkeley, one oral presentation in the Resident Lecture Series at Byers Eye Institute, and one oral presentation at Resident Research Day at Byers Eye Institute.
Residents are required to produce a manuscript of publishable quality by the end of the residency year. The manuscript may be clinical or research in nature. The resident will also complete a research project and will present the results at Resident Research Day at Byers Eye Institute.
The resident is encouraged (but not required) to develop a manuscript of publishable quality for that project. A research manuscript would satisfy the overall publishable-quality manuscript requirement. Research projects may include prospective observational studies, retrospective chart reviews, or other original research methodologies. The resident will receive mentorship from experienced attending physicians to support the design and completion of the approved research project and the development of the manuscript.
The resident is encouraged to attend continuing education programs of Berkeley Optometry, available at no or modest cost, and professional meetings held in the area.
