Preparation for the Optometry National Boards

  • The Berkeley Guide is continually revised, updated, and improved to ensure that you will pass the National Board Exams in Optometry the first time.

  • The comprehensive review of optometric material we have compiled is divided into an Applied Basic Sciences Guide, Part I and a Clinical Sciences Guide, Part II, similar in format to the first two parts of the National Boards. Within each of the two guides, information is organized according to topics suggested by the NBEO (National Board of Examiners in Optometry).

  • Both guides use a two-column format. The vast collection of material has also been supplemented with diagrams and bullet-pointed information, breaking up text making the guides easier on the eye and facilitating memorization.

  • In 2008, Part 1 of the Optometry National Boards was renamed "Applied Basic Science" (ABS), consisting of a blend of current Basic Science test items and many current Clinical Science test items. Most of these test items require referencing a clinical condition, either explicitly or implicitly. In addition, material from Part II-Clinical Sciences has shifted into the new ABS Part I; they are related to epidemiology/history/symptoms, and clinical testing (skills 1 and 2, respectively). Clinical Science items that test diagnosis and treatment (skill 3) remain within Part II.

  • Additionally, the NBEO (National Board of Examiners in Optometry) has incorporated clinically relevant questions that are more implicit in nature (vs. explicit). This calls for radical restructuring of how the material is studied and learned. Thus, the test is divided into new content-based topics that are focused on optometric conditions. The basic science knowledge will be related to the aforementioned topics as needed to understand that specific topic.

  • Note: Our Berkeley Study Guide has been revised to accommodate these changes to the best of our ability. It is available in two separate bound booklets reflecting the material and the new question style. Please check this website for the most updated information regarding the sales of our guide. For further questions or comments, email ucbguide@gmail.com.

  • For information regarding the new test format, visit www.optometry.org.

  • As always, we encourage you to buy in bulk as this will not only provide your school with another successful AOSA fundraiser, but it will help offset individual shipping costs (not to mention greatly facilitate the ordering process).
