NEI Summer Research Training Program

Berkeley Optometry invites applications from current OD students
for participation in a summer research training program funded by the
National Eye Institute (NEI; National Insititutes of Health).

labdetail

The aim of this program is to introduce currently enrolled optometry students to research as well as to opportunities for research as a career goal, thus increasing the number of OD graduates going on to post-graduate research. Some participants also co-author publications or present their work at the American Academy of Optometry or other scientific meetings.

NEI Summer Program Funding

Special NEI funding is available for students undergoing graduate training towards their OD degrees. The program requires a full-time 10-12 week commitment during the summer. Successful applicants will receive a stipend of $5,193 for 3-month summer appointments.

For post-OD research training support, see below.

Should You Apply?

This summer fellowship program is an ideal opportunity for you to determine whether research is for you. If you are a first-year optometry student with a potential interest in research, you are strongly encouraged to apply. This program also represents an opportunity to get to know future colleagues from other campuses and compare programs. In addition, students are eligible to apply for another round of funding in their second year to support on-going research. Second-year clinical programs and board examinations can be accommodated.

For tips and feedback from past fellowship holders, see Comments and Advice.

How Do You Apply?
  • The closing date for applications is March 19.
  • You must be currently enrolled in an optometry program and be either a US citizen or permanent resident to apply.
