To meet our mission, we further the frontiers of primary vision care practice and the frontiers of vision science research through the following goals.
Attract an excellent and well balanced faculty
Quality of faculty will be assess through research and teaching publication record; leadership positions on committees, editorial review boards, national and international scientific review committees; number and quality of graduate and post-doctoral students attracted; number of competitive contract and grant awards; participation in scholarly forums, and awards and prizes.
Attract excellent and dedicated staff
Staff members will uphold the mission of the School through support of teaching, clinical care and research; staff will be selected to provide maximal "customer support."
Attract the most promising students
Admitted students must have a high GPA record, excellent OAT scores and show evidence for leadership qualities as well as community involvement.
Provide state-of-the-art basic, clinical science & patient care teaching environments
Didactic and clinical teaching environments shall be constantly upgraded and contain the latest innovations.
Provide state-of-the-art research and research training
Research training shall be broad and include biological sciences related to eye disease, neurophysiological sciences related to perceptual and motor anomalies of vision, research programs in optics of the eye, lenses and contact lenses, binocular vision labs, diagnostic research programs, clinical research in low vision, environmental vision research, and aging and pediatric research.
Ensure a dynamic and state-of-the-art curriculum
The curriculum shall be under constant review and revision through the use of standing committees open to input from all constituents.
Foster in students a high value on curiosity, creativity, and professional integrity
Independent learning shall be taught and encouraged; leadership opportunities shall be provided.
Achieve institutionally and internationally acknowledged excellence and productive scholarship
Faculty will have successfully funded research programs and excellent publication records; collaborative research will be encouraged.
Have students and graduate practitioners demonstrate diagnostic and patient management skills, and understanding of the scientific inquiry method and creative problem-based thinking
Graduating students will pass all State and National licensing examinations; students will have an opportunity to participate in a research project prior to graduation.
Maintain a strong residency training programs for specialized training
The School will maintain an ACOE accredited residency program with a broad series of tracks of specialized training.
Maintain strong programs for life long learning commitment
The School will provide strong, approved optometric continuing education programs for its alumni and for Optometrists throughout the state and nation.
Provide public service to the community, profession and society
The School will provide patient services to the general public and special populations (indigent, very young, very old, socio-economically disadvantaged, multiply handicapped, high risk populations, partially sighted and blind); faculty will provide service to professional organization; the School will act as a resource for information to society in general.
Establish relationships supportive of School programs
Development and alumni support will be part of the School’s activities.
