History

Informal Agreements

Most members produce recent acquisitions lists, and will distribute copies to other AVSL members willing to reciprocate. Exchange lists of duplicate or weeded books and journals are also shared. Through an informal network, reference assistance is given and various helpful items, e.g., library instructional materials, are exchanged. Members also agree to reciprocal interlibrary loans (within the limitations of their institutional policies and for primary clientele only).

The above functions are frequently carried out using the AVSL e-mail reflector. The reflector was set up in order to facilitate the timely exchange of information among persons interested in vision science and related fields, especially as they apply to libraries/ information centers.

Partnerships

Cochrane Eyes and Vision Group (CEVG)

The CEVG is one of 49 review groups within the Cochrane Collaboration, an international organization started in 1993 that aims to help people make well-informed decisions about healthcare by preparing, maintaining, and promoting the accessibility of systematic reviews of the effects of healthcare interventions (http://www.cochrane.org). The US-based CEVG effortreceives funding from the National Eye Institute. AVSL members assist in handsearching the vision science literature to identify trial reports that meet the criteria for inclusion in the database.
Partners in Information Access for the Public Health Workforce
Several AVSL librarians have worked to provide pre-formulated search strategies and automatic PubMed searches for evidence-based literature in support of the vision objectives in Healthy People 2010.   This is a pilot project funded by the National Library of Medicine, with assistance from the Public Health Foundation and the National Network of Libraries of Medicine
